Wednesdays 3-5 p.m.: Youth Chess Club. Drop-in chess games. For ages 7-15. All skill levels are welcome. Bring your own set or use one of ours.

Thursdays 10:30-11 a.m.: Family Storytime. Stories, songs, rhymes and other activities for children ages 0-5 and their parents and caregivers.

Oct. 6, 10-11 a.m.: Eating Through Japan. Dr. Kaori Takano will be our guide. Learn travel tips – including specific tips relating to cruises in the region – and learn some basic Japanese language for travelers. Registration required.

Oct. 6, 5:307 p.m.: Gnarled Roots: Jewish Zine Fest. A showcase including several examples of Jewish zines, diasporic artwork, as well as physical and digital art pieces created in response to our prompt. This event is open for everyone and anyone, Jewish or non-Jewish, curious about engaging with Jewish identity, displacement and relationship to land. Register on the library’s online calendar.

Oct. 13, 3:30-4:30 p.m.: STEAM Lab: Eclipse Extravaganza. Get ready for the solar eclipse (which will be visible the morning of Oct. 14). Learn about how and why solar eclipses occur through crafts and activities. For ages 5-12.

Oct. 14, 9 a.m.-noon: Eclipse Festival. Enjoy the wonder of the solar eclipse. Solar viewing glasses (one per person) will be provided. All ages welcome.

Oct. 26, 10:30-11:30 a.m.: Family Halloween Storytime: Stories, songs, rhymes and other fun activities for Halloween. Wear a costume. Storytime lasts about 30 minutes with candy-free trick-or-treating throughout the library after.

Hopper’s Storytime: Thursdays 11-11:30 a.m. Read books, meet new friends and make a craft.

Children

Kindergarten Readiness Workshop Series: Tuesdays, 11 a.m.- noon. The Early Childhood Council of La Plata County and Pine River Library present a six-part series of free workshops for parents/caregivers and their preschool-age children.

Join us weekly to explore new interests, delve into the wonders of learning science and create artistic masterpieces.

STEAM Power Hour (Grades 3-5): Mondays, 4-5 p.m.

Junior STEAM Power Hour (Grades K-2): Wednesdays, 4-5 p.m.

Teens

Teen Free Play: Tuesdays and Thursdays, 4-5 p.m. Tabletop games, PlayStation, Oculus, food and fun.

Teen Tabletop Club: Monthly on the first Saturday, 11 a.m.-1 p.m. Tabletop gaming session. Magic, D&D, Cthulhu and more.

Weekly Programs

Full Body Fit Class: Monday-Thursday, 8:15-8:50 a.m. Work out using your own body weight or light hand weights to work all of the body parts. The free classes are similar in style but always different moves. You’ll need a yoga mat and light hand weights. If you don’t have them, there are extras. All ages and fitness levels.

Yoga For All: Tuesdays 9-10 a.m. and 6-7 p.m. Thursdays, 9-10 a.m.: Need a yoga mat and a water bottle. Some yoga tools such as blocks, a blanket and a strap are encouraged.

Friends of the Library Shed Book Sale: Tuesdays, 1-3 p.m.: Weekly pop-up book sale.

Open Art Studio: Thursdays, 10 a.m.-2 p.m.: All mediums. All ages. Work on projects in a group setting.

Community Knitting and Crochet Group: Sundays, 2-4 p.m.: All are welcome. Whether you have been knitting and/or crocheting for years or would like to learn.

Adult Programs

Oct. 2, 6-8 p.m.: Typeset Writer’s Group: No rules, just writing. Each month, a member of the group will bring an article for discussion. Participants also have the option to bring two pages of their own writing to read aloud, but it’s not required. If you’d like to read your own writing, bring it in manuscript format.

Oct. 4, 10 a.m.: Delayed library opening because of monthly staff meeting.

Oct. 10, 10-11 a.m.: Card Making at the Pine River Senior Center: Ccreate two beautiful handmade cards. Free.

Oct. 11, 6-7:30 p.m.: BookMarks Book Club: Open to all adults in the Pine River Valley. Library provides the books, discussion leader and a place to meet each month. Stop by the front desk to check out a copy of this month's title: “Such Sharp Teeth,” by Rachel Harrison

Oct. 14, 10-11 a.m.: Great American Eclipse Party: Bring a blanket or chair and gather for an eclipse-watching party in the library park. Free glasses available and kids activities.

Oct. 17, 1-2:30 p.m.: Death Café: A time and place where people come to share food, drink tea or coffee, and discuss death openly and honestly. The aim is to increase awareness about death in order to help people make the most of their (finite) lives.

Oct. 18, noon-1 p.m.: Cookbook Club: Share a potluck of recipes from our chosen cookbook. In October, we’ll be cooking recipes from “Salt Fat Acid Heat,” by Samin Nosrat. Pick up a copy at the front desk of the library and then call or email Darcy when you have chosen the recipe you’d like to cook for the potluck (884-2222, ext. 522, darcy@prlibrary.org).

Oct. 23, 6-7 p.m.: SJBPH Overdose Prevention and Naloxone Training: The San Juan Basin Public Health Opioid Risk Reduction program will provide an educational presentation about how to use naloxone (aka Narcan) and other overdose prevention information. Naloxone is an opioid overdose reversal medication that is safe and easy to use. Those attending may pick up naloxone kits and also learn about resources and recovery support. Oct. 24, 6-7 p.m.: Postpartum Care: Postpartum and Birth doula Leah Ryder is hosting a free “Postpartum Prep” course. During this class we will be discussing significant points in postpartum planning such as breastfeeding, sleep, supplies, postpartum depression and more. Also gain access to a list of local resources and professional support.

Oct. 26, 11:30 a.m.- 12:30 p.m.: Practice your Spanish in an informal setting. All ages and language levels welcome.

Powerhouse Pass Program, Sunnyside Library and Fort Lewis Mesa Library have Powerhouse Passes available for check out at each library. The pass will allow you and your immediate family free entry to the Powerhouse Science Center. Passes can be checked out on an adult library card for one week.

Check Out State Parks Program, Fort Lewis and Sunnyside libraries have “Check Out State Parks” backpacks available for check out. Each pack includes a pass for free entry to Colorado state parks, binoculars, wildlife viewing guides and park information. The pack can be checked out on an adult library card for one week.
