Officer, I wasn’t swerving. It’s the line!

Monday morning commuters on Florida Road might have thought they needed a little more coffee when coming upon crooked, double-yellow traffic lines on new asphalt. A Durango city crew spent the morning spraying black paint over the lines to make way for an updated attempt.

City workers painted swerving double lines down Florida Road on Friday, from the intersection of 15th Street and East Third Avenue to the roundabout.

“The lines clearly were not to the right standard, so that’s why we fixed them today,” said Streets Superintendent Levi Lloyd on Monday. However, the city did not receive any complaints during the weekend about the lines.

The lines were replaced with intermittent marks on Monday for drivers to use as a guide until permanent striping can be done with a truck on Sept. 29, he said.

The city workers had used a cart that is intended for parking lot lines on both days, he said.

City spokesman Wayne Walsh said he has tried to use the cart a few times and found it’s extremely challenging work because ground surface is often slightly uneven.

“It’s a job for someone that has a very steady hand and can walk a very straight line,” Walsh said.
