Like other extractive corporations, oil and gas companies spend enormous amounts trying to tilt an election their way if they see a threat to their profits. They have some favorite tactics, which they use repeatedly all over the world. We are now seeing them appear here in Colorado in their massive media blitz around fracking.
One tactic is to arouse fear, claiming that Colorado’s economy will slump if we protect public health and safety with reasonable setbacks. Not true: oil and gas extraction is only a very small part of our economy. In fact, investing in renewable energy will create far more jobs and income.
Another tactic is reassurance, claiming “Our operations are perfectly safe _ there’s nothing to worry about!” Not true: the health and safety risks of gas extraction, including explosions, mini-earthquakes, groundwater contamination, air pollution and toxic spills, are well documented by numerous scientific studies (and by Colorado victims). One scientist summarizes: “The closer you live to a well, the more dangerous it is.”
A third tactic is to generate supposedly “impartial” letters and TV testimonials supporting fracking and extraction. Be aware that many of the authors and “experts” are tied in with the oil and gas industry in various ways.
Bottom line: Don’t be deceived by the corporate media blitz. Vote YES on 112.
