Old Fort Farmer in Training program application now available

The Farmer-In-Training Program 2023 is now accepting applications.

The Farmer-In-Training will run from May 16 to Oct. 12. A living stipend of up to $2,500 is available for Native American farmers and farmers from other communities underrepresented in farming. The course cost is $2,250. There are full and partial scholarships available.

Farmers-in-training gain hands-on experience growing vegetables at high elevation. The program consists of morning field work, afternoon classes and field trips. FITs work with program staff members to tend about 2 acres of vegetables, learning new and traditional skills and techniques vital to farming at high elevation.

Applications received by Jan. 20 will be responded to by Feb. 10. Applications received by Feb. 15 will be responded to by March 10.
