With the council/manager form of government Durango has, it is the responsibility of the council to provide direction to the city manager who then directs the staff to carry out the policies of the council.
What has happened is that the manager and the staff have taken the lead, directing the council on what they need to act on. This has resulted in millions of dollars in wasted tax dollars, with nothing to show for it.
Olivier Bosmans has been the person fighting for your money. He voted against $600,000 to plan Next Steps and the $200,000 to put fake sidewalks and paint red circles on street corners to “study” Next Steps.
He voted against suing both the Southern Ute Indian Tribe and La Plata County. He was the only council member to question a $400,000 budget item to design and build a bathroom for the pickleball courts.
He has constantly questioned the hiring of expensive consultants to work on projects that are not needed and not wanted. How much money was wasted on consultants trying to force a roundabout to fit at the end of Third Avenue?
Bosmans believes in taking care of the assets we have before we build something that is not needed and not wanted. Streets all over town need repair, alleys are not paved and residential sidewalks in many neighborhoods are dangerous, especially in our “dark sky” community.
Bosmans, with two new members on the Council, can be an effective advocate for us.
