Olympic champ I-Pod suffers broken nose after scary wreck

ASPEN — Olympic champion Iouri Podladtchikov suffered a broken nose after slamming his head against the halfpipe at the Winter X Games, and was awake and alert at the hospital Sunday night.

X Games officials said scans for brain and neck injuries came back negative.

The snowboarder known as the I-Pod was attempting a 1260-degree jump on his last trick in the halfpipe when he slammed against the lip, snapping his neck backward, as he fell limp to the center of the pipe.

Action was halted for more than 10 minutes while medical personnel stabilized his neck and strapped him onto a stretcher.

Japan’s Ayumu Hirano came back less than 30 minutes after the wreck and landed back-to-back 1440-degree jumps to win the contest with a score of 99.
