Once again, firefighters perform miracles

I picked roses today, from the same bushes that survived the Missionary Ridge Fire. I watered pansies in planter boxes outside my kitchen window, and watched my two dogs peacefully roam the property behind our house, the land that once surged in flames during a backburn. I looked up at the hillside that is once again green.

I look across the valley to watch in horror as flames advance relentlessly toward homes in Hermosa and Falls Creek. And I am astounded that each time, with each wave of flaming destruction advancing, homes are spared.

The helicopters, the air tankers, the fire crews on the ground are performing acts of heroism all day, every day. They labor in extreme conditions and yet prevail.

I was humbled and grateful for the crews from Durango, Pierre and Rapid City, South Dakota, that saved our home. Once again, I am in awe of the men and women who are going above and beyond to save our homes and our town. Thank you seems inadequate, but my gratitude is heartfelt. I want them to know how we so value their efforts and expertise.

My prayers are with them daily. May they stay safe and succeed in this battle. They are heroes performing true miracles. Godspeed, everyone.
