One B down, one B to go at the Aztec B&B Invitational

The Bayfield High School boys track and field team is sitting pretty after Day 1 of the Aztec B&B Invitational on Friday in Aztec.

BHS leads Pagosa Springs 22-21 for first place on the boys side with five events scored.

The Wolverines’ girls team is sixth with four events scored, trailing first-place Aztec.

Aubry Brown paced Bayfield’s throwing squad, finishing second in the boys shot put at 43 feet, 2 inches and second in the boys discus throw at 137-4.

Blane Barns threw the discus 119-3 to slide into fourth.

Connor Kennedy took third in the boys high jump at 5-10.

Trevor Gabbard finished third in the boys 3,200-meter run in 10 minutes, 36.34 seconds. He also scored a goal in the Durango High School lacrosse team’s 7-6 win over Grand Junction on Friday.

Brittany Hunter tied for third in the girls pole vault at 8-6.

Brian Mashak tied for fourth in the boys 200-meter dash preliminaries at 23.85.

Brady Fields took seventh in the boys 110-meter hurdle preliminaries at 17.63 seconds.

Jessica Cusick finished third in the girls 400-meter dash preliminaries at 1:01.83.

Jessica Roukema came in fifth in the girls 200-meter dash preliminaries at 28.47 seconds.

All five of them will compete in Saturday’s finals.

Durango High School

The Demons didn’t send their full squad down to Aztec, but the contingent there is in fourth on the boys side and ninth on the girls side after one day of competition.

Caleb Lloyd finished fifth in the boys shot put at 39-8.

Gordon Gianniny came in fourth in the boys 3,200-meter run at 10:41:39.

Seamus Millett finished third in the boys 800-meter run at 2:10.18, and Coltin Gallegos was right behind him one second later in fourth.

Maggie Wigton took fifth in the girls 1,600-meter run in 6:02.31.

Zeb Soignier took fifth in the boys 110-meter hurdles preliminaries in 17.31 seconds and also qualified for the 300-meter hurdles in sixth.

Justin Marcum qualified for the boys 100- and 200-meter dash finals. He took fifth in the 100 in 11.75 seconds and tied for fourth in the 200 at 23.85.

Shane Bisogno finished in front of him in the boys 100-meter dash in second at 11.63 seconds.

Devin Lewis will join them in the 200-meter final after qualifying eighth in 24.09 seconds.

Mia Irwin came in third in the girls 100-meter hurdles preliminaries at 17.18.

Ignacio High School

Kelton Richmond had a banner day for the Bobcats. He took third in the boys discus throw at 125-10 and fourth in the boys shot put at 40-0.

Christian Knoll helped Ignacio’s cause by qualifying for the boys 400-meter dash in seventh at 54.26 seconds.

Nicholas Herrera finished seventh in the boys high jump at 5-9, and Wyatt Hayes took eighth in the boys triple jump at 37-5.5.

Chrystianne Valdez posted the Bobcats’ best finish on the girls side with a 7-0 lead in the pole vault, good for 10th place.
