One killed in crash on U.S. Highway 491

Three others injured, taken to Southwest Memorial Hospital

One person died and three people were injured in a single-car crash Wednesday on U.S. Highway 491 south of Dove Creek, according to the Colorado State Patrol.

The crash was reported at 9:40 a.m. at mile marker 58 and involved a white 2005 sedan with Utah plates, said Trooper Josh Lewis.

A female injured in the crash was flown by a Flight for Life helicopter to Southwest Memorial Hospital, but died from her injuries, Lewis said.

Three other occupants were injured and were taken to Southwest Memorial Hospital by ambulance.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation, Lewis said. Names of the victims and extent of injuries have not been released.

The crash occurred 3 miles south of Dove Creek. Traffic was initially allowed through on an alternating lane basis, according to the preliminary report. The highway was then closed around 10:30 a.m. to allow the helicopter to land and transport the injured female. It reopened around 11:45 a.m.

“It was a terrible wreck, the vehicle was torn apart,” said Judy Johnson, a traveler who waited for the highway to reopen.

She said the crashed vehicle was off the west side of the road.
