One killed in early-morning crash on U.S. Highway 160

Driver of Subaru strays into oncoming traffic

One person was killed about 4:30 a.m. Sunday when the driver of an eastbound Subaru strayed into the westbound lane and struck a semitrailer on U.S. Highway 160 between Twin Buttes and Lightner Creek Road.

Durango Police Department Detective Brad Roach said the cause of the crash remains under investigation. Investigators, he added, don’t yet now why the Subaru driver strayed into the oncoming lane.

The identity of the person killed in the crash is not being released pending notification of next of kin, Roach said. Roach anticipated the person killed would be identified Monday morning.

He said an autopsy will be scheduled.

Roach declined to comment on whether weather or alcohol were factors.

U.S. Highway 160 was closed from 4:30 a.m. to about 10 a.m. with traffic rerouted via county roads and Colorado Highway 140.
