One person killed in fatal crash Thursday morning in southwest La Plata County

Vehicle with driver and three children rolled 30 feet down embankment

A woman was killed in a single-vehicle crash Thursday morning on La Plata Highway about 2 miles north of the New Mexico state line in southwest La Plata County, according to the Colorado State Patrol.

The crash was reported at 8:26 a.m. near mile marker 2 on Colorado Highway 140, where a vehicle rolled 30 feet down an embankment, said Master Trooper Gary Cutler.

“We were advised that the roads were very icy,” he said.

Three children were in the vehicle, but they were taken out of the vehicle and were receiving care, Cutler said.

Capt. John Trentini in Durango said a female driver was killed in the crash. The children had “rather minor injuries,” he said.

No further information was immediately available, including the make and model of the vehicle, what direction the vehicle was heading, and what may have led to the crash.

It was not immediately known whether Highway 140 was closed for any amount of time as a result of the crash.
