A one-point second quarter cost the Durango High School girls basketball team in its league opener on the road Tuesday.
Mason Rowland scored 16 of Durango’s 22 points in a 26-22 loss at Class 5A No. 11 Fruita Monument (4-0, 1-0 SWL) in the 5A/4A Southwestern League opener for the Demons (2-3, 0-1 SWL).
“Give Fruita credit, their defense caused us some problems, and we missed a lot of shots,” DHS head coach Tim Fitzpatrick said.
DHS went 0-of-9 from the 3-point line and missed a lot of shots inside, as well.
“That second quarter, we really didn’t play well,” Fitzpatrick said. “That kind of doomed us. We made an effort to come back and cut it, but we have to get better. We have to be able to slow ourselves down a bit on the offensive end and not be in a hurry.”
DHS will drive back to Durango and get ready to go back to Grand Junction (2-2, 0-0 SWL) for another league game at 5 p.m. Friday.
