Only Dodge City, Kan., keeps Durango from being magazine’s No. 1 Western town

Gunfights are seldom seen downtown these days, but our fair city still ranks as one of the top 10 true Western towns, at least according to True West Magazine.

The magazine says that with Durango’s historic railroads and evident Western culture in mind, the sometimes-called “Hollywood of the Rockies” was named second in its 2014 list. The February issue hit the newsstands Tuesday.

Coming in first was Dodge City, Kan., known for its frontier travelers, brothels, Western Trail and gunfighters. It once was nicknamed the “Sodom of the West” for its violent nature in the 19th century – a reference to the famous biblical city of sin.

“Durango is one of our favorite places,” said True West executive editor Bob Boze Bell in a news release. “The history, museums, the buildings, the activities all make it very special for anyone interested in the Old West. It’s a truly Top Western Town.”

Perhaps, but the definition of “Western” may have changed a bit through the years. Now, the atmosphere is a combination of modern and organic, with a Western twist. Along with a breath of the “Old West” and the “cowboy type” you’ll see walking along Main Avenue, you’ll also get a heavy dose of various boutiques and outdoor stores.
