Only well-trained should carry a firearm

How many legislators in the state Senate have had any form of extensive gun training (Herald, Jan. 24)?

I own guns and believe in the right to own guns.

I have also taken concealed carry permit courses. The training required to obtain a concealed carry permit is woefully inadequate.

During the course of taking these classes, there were individuals who were given a certification of completion, that in my opinion, should not be allowed to even own a gun. The level of training that is required to adequately be in a position to use a gun is extensive.

I am talking about the level of training required by law enforcement.

The qualities required are the ability and experience to safely operate a gun, and more importantly, the willingness to use that gun.

In different scenarios, the person with a gun must make a split-second decision as to whether or not to use lethal force.

We do not need a teacher who is untrained and “Gung-Ho” to use a gun just as much as we do not want to put our respected teachers in a position where they might need to make a decision over life or death.

Let us provide teachers with training in the use of non-lethal techniques, and if a school district feels the need for stronger measures, then hire professionals.
