Before my grandson Liam turned 1, our family got news no one wants to hear: He had congestive heart failure, and a transplant was his only chance. Three weeks after he was placed on the transplant list, Liam received the gift of life through organ donation.
Today Liam is 12. His passion is soccer, and he enjoys outdoor activities such as fishing and hiking, living the life his new heart made possible. Our family thinks about his donor every day.
Right now, 1,300 people in Colorado are waiting for that same call. This summer I’m participating in the Donor Dash, a 5K on July 19 at Washington Park in Denver that honors everyone touched by donation. I hope Durango will join me. For the past 10 years, we have had a team at the Donor Dash – Liam’s HeartClub.
Anyone can register as an organ, eye and tissue donor today at DonorAlliance.org. Please consider it. You could be someone’s miracle, the way Liam’s donor was ours.
