Our Cold Civil War: Democracy vs. Autocracy

The citizens of the U.S. are in a cold civil war. There are the people who believe in the rule of law and the Constitution that has lasted 250 years and those who believe in wielding power without regard to history, to law or the Constitution. It is a battle of philosophies. Some based on democracy and some on autocracy and power. A few examples:

There are Justice Department staff who prosecuted the Jan. 6 criminals who desecrated the Capitol, wanted to hang the vice president, kill police and members of Congress. There are also people who believe that those invaders were expressing patriotic opinions. Prosecutions vs. pardons. Trump’s pardons were shameful.

Rounding up legal residents and working people without warrants with unmarked cars and plain-clothed thugs with masks. This behavior is not supposed to happen in a democracy. Due process is the rule of law. It only happens when the gang ordering the roundups are authoritarians. Think of Nazis or the KGB of old.

Redistricting is done after every Census to balance the Congressional districts. It is not done mid-decade unless the people in power are fearful of losing their majority. Under direct orders by the president, Texas has gerrymandered its map to disenfranchise voters so that Republicans can pick up some seats. Such a plan is only done by authoritarians.

The tyrant and his acolytes will not prevail. Only truth, history, the rule of law and the Constitution will.
