Our politics have become just a game

NFL Football. It’s “America’s Game.” We take sides. We cheer. We are entertained.

From college up through the NFL it’s a huge business. You can tell just by the advertising volume it generates. It’s fairly cheap; you get it for just the price of your television set.

Best of all, it’s voluntary. Game over and we go about our business.

Politics has become America’s game as well. We take sides. We cheer. We are entertained. It is also a huge business, and when you consider the profit value to all of the special interests that are supported by politics, it’s a business that is much larger than any sport.

But it is far from cheap, and although we think we choose to stand on the sidelines and watch, it is certainly not voluntary. Unfortunately however, just like football, game over and we go about our business.

The political regular season is played every two years, with the finals every four years, followed by business as usual. The economy, the climate, health care, financial controls, the infrastructure, the tax system, immigration … the list is very long and almost entirely ignored. Ignored because politics, with our two-team league, is only interested in politics, not in governance.

I think the problem is money, and I have some ideas; you probably have some ideas, too. I would like to convene a conversation to see if any of them might be solid enough to pursue. If interested, email me at Leo.Cohen1234@gmail.com.
