Durango’s version of the running of the Pamplona bulls kicks off today as 1,800 riders and racers get ready to mount their trusty steeds Saturday morning for the 53rd Iron Horse Bicycle Classic.
Whether at the start in the mix of racers and riders, or a fan spectating on the side of the road ringing cowbells, the IHBC is a rush. It’s a major accomplishment to ride the 50 miles and climb over 5,000 feet to reach Silverton at whatever age or time it takes. It is both exhilarating (and exhausting) to ride in and fun to watch, so be sure to come out.
We’re excited about the return to Buckley Park Friday – for locals’ packet pickup, the Ska/Steamworks Faceplant Tapping and Iron Horse kickoff Party – and the mountain bike race through Steamworks on Sunday.
Though not quite ‘through’ this year for rider safety (it’s dark in the bar) and business to carry on, starting at 8:30 a.m. until 3:30 p.m., racers will ride through the back alley up a steep ramp onto the terrace and around the north side of the bar. It will surely be a thrill.
Race organizers are grateful to the City of Durango, Business Improvement District, and the 100+ volunteers without whom the weekend events would not have returned downtown or the events would take place. In fact, they could still use some 30 people to help, so visit the volunteer tab at ironhorsebicycleclassic.com to sign up.
Be safe, have fun and ring that bell!
