Our view: Better together

Unless we’re pulled over, have an emergency, or get lost in the mountains, most of us rarely interact with local law enforcement, EMS workers, firefighters, or Search & Rescue volunteers. We’re glad they’re out there — but do we really know them?

National Night Out, this Tuesday, Aug. 5, is a chance to meet the people who keep our community safe. Ask questions, see demonstrations, meet a K-9 officer, play games, share a meal — and say “thank you.”

The Herald’s editorial board is grateful for these public servants and their commitment to protect and serve, especially given the risks they face.

Started in 1984 as a modest crime-prevention effort, National Night Out now brings together millions across the country. In Durango, the focus is on strengthening police-community relationships, encouraging public involvement in crime prevention, and helping create safer neighborhoods.

The local event runs from 5 to 7:30 p.m. Tuesday at Buckley Park. Bring the family — and your appetite. Free BBQ and cold drinks will be served, courtesy of Michael Stratton (in honor of his late father and former Durango Police Chief Robert “Bob” Stratton), Serious Texas BBQ, and Coca-Cola (Herald, Aug. 3).

As the event website puts it: “We’re better together — this night proves it.” Visit bit.ly/4fencWo for more information.
