Our view: Gold Star Moms

Families who lost children in U.S. conflicts gather in Durango this weekend

Colorado’s Gold Star Mothers – family members who have lost a child in U.S. conflicts since Sept. 11, 2001 – hold their annual meeting and host the 2025 Gold Star Parents Healing Conference in Durango this weekend.

Saturday from 9:30 a.m. to noon at VFW Post 4031, 1550 Main Ave., parents will speak about their loved ones, view a film on the Gold Star program nationally, and see photos and short biographies of the more than 400 Colorado-connected individuals who have died since 9/11. This display is called The Hall of Heroes.

The public is welcome Saturday morning. About five dozen parents are expected, arriving Friday afternoon and gathering for dinner Saturday evening.

Founded in Colorado in 2017, the Gold Star Project of Colorado follows the national model, offering seminars, counseling, and the chance to connect with other families facing similar losses. Costs to attend are largely covered by contributions – reflecting the sense that these families have already given enough.

The Gold Star Mothers is a group no one wants to join. Stop by the VFW Saturday morning to offer condolences for the devastating toll of American wars on these families. They deserve that much.
