Our View: Remembering Garcia, looking ahead with Carvers

Francis Garcia passed away a week ago at 81. He with his wife, Claudine, lived a nonstop life, including founding a taxicab company, as a truck driver (Francis), enjoying a cabin at Electra Lake and a cattle ranch, and multiple international trips.

Durangoans knew Francis, and Claudine, best at their Francisco’s Lounge then Francisco’s Restaurante Y Cantina in the 600 block of Main Avenue beginning in 1968.

They both naturally enjoyed people, which made the full plates of beef, cheese, chilies and chips – or a beer at the bar – surrounded by Mexican décor that much more enjoyable. The staff were considered family, as well, under their direction, and it showed: eager and helpful.

While we remember Francis Garcia at Francisco’s, we can welcome the second generation of Carvers as they continue what their uncle and father began in 1983 first as a bakery then as the second brewpub in the state.

Serving lunch and dinner, Carver Brewing Co. (“Carver’s”) in the 1000 block of Main Avenue has been a popular gathering spot for Durangoans, while Jim and Bill added outdoor dining and created ever-evolving craft beers.

The second generation are siblings, Claire and Colin, children of Bill.

The next generation always wants to do something different, which is understandable, but Carver’s is loaded with appeal as is. Bring back breakfast with its blueberry pancakes? That would be acceptable.

Good luck to all the Carvers.
