Some of the new parking meters are out of order. I guess that’s to be expected. They are more complicated than the old meters. But when the meter isn’t working, the city puts up a sign saying “no parking” for that spot. Why is that? Durango residents need every parking spot we can get.
What the city should do is put up a sign saying “free half-hour parking.” What’s the worst that could happen? If the city is worried that someone may park there all day before the police realize it, then I say that’s a good thing. One car parking there all day is better than a parking spot going unused.
I think the real problem is that the city thinks parking is a way to get money from residents. But actually, parking should be a service to benefit residents.
As a reminder, let me say that government should be here to serve the people, not the other way around.
