Starry Night Snowshoe Tour to be held

The Starry Night Snowshoe Tour will be held from 6-8 p.m. March 11 at Andrews Lake.

Participants should bring warm clothing, warm boots, hot drinks, binoculars and a flashlight with a red lens. Snowshoes will be needed.

Kids and small adult snowshoes are available for free upon request. Participants will meet at the plowed parking area on the east side U.S. Highway 550 (about 0.25 mile north of the Andrew Lake turn off). Location is subject to change if the roads are bad. Suitable for ages 7-and-up. Kids carried in packs are allowed.

Volunteers needed for a trail program

San Juan Mountains Association, in partnership with Canyons of the Ancients National Monument (CANM), is recruiting volunteers for the Trail Information Specialists program at Sand Canyon located in Cortez.

Volunteers will be trained in interacting with the public that uses the Sand Canyon and East Rock areas of the Monument. Specifically, they will be hiking, biking or horseback riding the Sand Canyon Trail area during high-use times of the year and informing the public about Leave No Trace ethics, as well as CANM regulations.

Uniforms, name tags, and training are provided. This is a public contact program and anyone interested in preserving the natural beauty of Sand Canyon is welcome to apply. If interested, contact Kathe@sjma.org or 385-1310.

Senior Outdoor events announced

Senior Outdoors will offer the following events:

Saturday Snowshoe with John Martin. Specific details for these Saturday Snowshoe hikes (destination, description, 4WD, etc) will be emailed about two days in advance. Martin will announce on which trips an avalanche beacon is highly recommended. A shovel will be required on all trips. Turn backs with a partner may be permitted. Carpool will cost $3-$8, depending on destination. Dogs are allowed. To RSVP, call 749-4056 or email mudpatch22@gmail.com.

General Meeting Spring Potluck will be held Tuesday. The social will be held at 6:30 p.m., and the potluck starts at 7 p.m. Participants should bring their own table service and a dish for eight with a serving utensil. A-F main dish, G-M salad or side, N-R main dish, and S-Z dessert. In addition to their potluck dish, participants shall bring non-perishable food donations or a check for the Manna Soup Kitchen.

WW hike: Animas River Trail will be held on Wednesday. No RSVP required. Dogs must be on leash per city ordinance. For more information, call 247-1130.

Natures Studies program to be offered

Durango Nature Studies announce the upcoming events for March:

Watershed Workshop with Anthony Reinert, Durango Nature Studies Program Facilitator, will be held from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday at the Old Fort in Hesperus. Participants will learn about watersheds and how they effect the ecology of an area. They will explore the La Plata River at the Old Fort and talk about how this river impacts the health of the watershed, while learning about the plants and animals that depend on it to survive.

There won’t be costs for members; the cost for non-members is $10; snowshoe rental cost is $3.

Green Laser Star Program will be held by John Buting from 7:30-9:30 p.m. March 11 at the Old Fort in Hesperus.

The event is free for members, the cost is $10 for non-members. Participants should bring binoculars.

Spring Volunteer Naturalist/Educator Training from 6-8:30 p.m. March 16 at the Fairgrounds, and from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. March 18 and March 19 at the Nature Center, 1309 East Third Ave. No. 27.

Participants can become a fully qualified volunteer naturalist, ready to lead science-based, hikes for kids in kindergarten, first, third and eighth grades. Volunteers will receive a detailed manual as part of the training. School programs will take place at the Durango Nature Center. No prior experience is necessary.
