Snowmobile group to meet

The San Juan Sledders snowmobile group will meet from 6 to 9 p.m., Thursday, in the Exhibit Hall in the Lightner Room at the La Plata County Fair Grounds, 2500 Main Ave. SJS will provide pizza, water, soft drinks and paper supplies. The meeting will start at 7 p.m. and new members are welcome.

Some Nordic Center announces events

The Nordic Center at Purgatory announces the following events:

The annual Langlauf long-distance Nordic race will take place Saturday. There will be both a 30km and a 15km race for adults and shorter distances for juniors. Registration is at 9 a.m. at the Nordic Center and the races start at 10 a.m. The cost of the race is $15 for juniors and $30 for adults.

A skate ski clinic will be held at 1 p.m. Sunday. There will be classes for skiers of all ability levels. Equipment rentals are available at the Nordic Center. The cost of the clinic is $25 for Nordic season pass holders or $30 for other skiers.

Snowshoe hikes to be held Saturdays

Snowshoe with John Martin will take place at 9 a.m. Saturday.

Specific details for these Saturday Snowshoe hikes (such as destination, description, 4-wheel-requirements) will be emailed about two days in advance. Martin will announce on which trips an avalanche beacon is highly recommended. A shovel will be required on all trips. Turnbacks with a partner may be permitted. Moderate snowshoe hike to be held

Moderate snowshoe above Little Molas Lake will take place at 9 a.m. Monday.

Exact route will depend on snow conditions. Expect to spend about four hours on the trail. Carpooling will cost $5. Dogs are not allowed. Use 4-wheel-drive if U.S. Highway 550 is snowy. To RSVP, call 247-9747 or email chasberglund@msn.com

General Meeting at Recreation Center

General Meeting will take place at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, at Recreational Center 2700 Main Ave.

Topics will be building and maintaining trails in Colorado from Trails 2000 and the Colorado Trail and how to participate in their programs.

WW Hike to be held on Animas River Trail

WW Hike: Animas River Trail will take place at 9:30 a.m. Wednesday. No RSVP is required. Dogs must be on leash per city ordinance. For more information, call 247-1130.

Winter Warrior 10K race results announced

Durango Nordic Center was witness to the sixth edition of the Winter Warrior 10K snowshoe race.

Brendan Trimboli of Durango Running Club finished in a 58:13 time.

In the Ladies competition Durango’s Kathryn Ross who dethroned fellow Durangoan’s Megan Finnesey’s 2012 record by posting a 63:04 effort. In the Men’s 10K 45+ division, Gerry Geraghty finished after a 72:59 time.

Thirteen-year-old Ian Dodds of Farmington finished with a 39:22 time the 5K races. Diane Thornton finished the Ladies 5K field with a 42:46 effort, Dewachen Ilg took the 44-and-under category for the second consecutive year at the Winter Warrior. The first ever Best Costume Award was won by Sean Meissner.

SJMA announces Winter Discovery Walk

The San Juan Mountains Association will hold the third Critter Curiosity from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. Saturday, at Chris Park.

Participants follow tracks, look for burrows and evidence of elk. Participants should dress for the weather and bring water and a snack, and will meet at the parking area near Rapp Corral. Kids and small adult snowshoes are available free upon request. The walk is suitable for ages 5 and up. Younger kids carried in packs are allowed.

Ice fishing tourney set for Feb. 20

The Vallecito Conservation and Sporting Association will host its annual ice fishing tournament from 6:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Feb. 20.

Registration will start at 5:30 a.m. at the Vallecito Community Center.

Pre-registration is available online at www.vallecitosportingclub.org, and all contestants must check in the day of the tournament.

The entry fee is $30, and $400 cash prizes will be awarded for the largest trout, largest pike and heaviest stringer. Second place in each contest is $300 cash, third place is $200, and fourth place is a $100 gift card. Other prizes will be offered, as well. All contestants must weigh in their catch at 2:30 p.m.

Kids from ages 5 to 12 will receive a free ice fishing starter kit while supplies last.

Community Cares 5K is set for Feb. 13

The Seventh Annual Community Cares 5K/1 Mile Fun Run will take place Feb. 13. The 1-mile fun run is scheduled for 10 a.m. with the 5K following at 10:45 a.m.

This scenic race traverses along the Animas River Trail. Registration will begin at 8:30 a.m. and end at 9:45 a.m. in the Durango Community Recreation Center’s Windom Room.

The event is free with a suggested donation of $10 that will go directly to the Dugan family. Kristen Dugan of Durango has been battling cancer since 2012, and the race aims to raise money for her care. Kristen and Jeremy Dugan have two boys in first and third grades at Park Elementary School.
