Last skate clinic of season to be held

The Nordic Center at Purgatory will hold their last skate clinic of the season at 1 p.m. Saturday.

There will be classes for skiers of all ability levels. Equipment rentals are available at the Nordic Center.

The cost of the clinic is $25 for Nordic season pass holders or $30 for other skiers.

Saturday Snowshoe hike to be held

Saturday Snowshoe with John Martin will take place at 9 a.m. Saturday.

Specific details for these Saturday Snowshoe hikes will be emailed about two days in advance. Martin will announce on which trips an avalanche beacon is highly recommended. A shovel will be required on all trips. Turnbacks with a partner may be permitted.

Carpools are $3-$8, depending on the destination. Dogs are allowed.

WW hike Animas River Trail announced

The next WW Hike on the Animas River Trail will take place at 9:30 a.m. Wednesday. No RSVP is required. Dogs must be on a leash, per city ordinance. The leader will be Eric Pahlke.

Durango Nature Studies events announced

Durange Nature Studies announces the following events:

An Animal Habitat and Tracking Snowshoe Workshop will take place from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday at the Old Fort in Hesperus. Emily Schaefgen, DNS program facilitator, will be the instructor. The cost is $10 for non-members and free for members. Snowshoe rentals are $3.

Full Moon Snowshoe Hike Under the Snow Moon will be held from 5:50 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Monday at the Old Fort in Hesperus. Anthony Reinert, DNS program facilitator, will be the instructor. The cost is $10 for non-members and free for members. Participants should bring their own snowshoes or rent them for $3.

Two Wolf Creek events announced

Wolf Creek Ski announces the following events:

The Wolf Creek Challenge Series starts with the first of two races at 10 a.m. Saturday. The course will be a Giant Slalom with over 40 gates. The race is open to individuals and teams. Entry fees are $15 for ages 18-and-older and $10 for ages 17-and-younger.

A Telemark clinic will take place Saturday. A lift ticket is only $43 when participants purchase a two-hour morning Telemark lesson for $39. Telemark rentals are available for $14. The lesson is open to all ability levels from beginner to advanced. Also, a Grass Sticks Ski Poles Demo will be held.

Mesa Verde to hold slew of events

Mesa Verde National Park announces the following activities:

Park Rangers will lead a guided hike around the Far View sites focusing on winter ecology at Mesa Verde National Park at 10 a.m. Saturday.

The guided hike is free, but advance sign-up is requested. Children should be at least 7 years old to join the hike.

Parking is limited at the Far View Sites, so participants will meet at the Far View Terrace parking lot and then carpool to the Far View Sites. Participants will learn about winter life cycles of plants and animals found in the park and discuss what life was like in the winter for the ancestral Puebloans. Participants should be prepared to be outdoors for two to three hours with extra layers of clothing, water and snacks.

The park will begin accepting applications for a commercial use authorization (CUA) for bicycle rental operations on Wetherill Mesa in Mesa Verde National Park; the operation will also include stroller and wheel chair rentals.

The National Park Service will issue up to one CUA authorizing a temporary bicycle rental operation located at Wetherill Mesa parking area in Mesa Verde National Park. Under the CUA, the permittee will be authorized to rent bicycles to park visitors for use on approved roads and trails on Wetherill Mesa. The permittee will be responsible for providing and maintaining all rental equipment necessary for the operation as well as temporary sales and storage facilities. The National Park Service will issue the CUA for an initial term of 12 months. The need for the CUA will be re-evaluated after the initial season. A copy of the application and application instructions, along with 2015 visitation statistics for Wetherill Mesa, can be obtained by contacting the Mesa Verde National Park Concessions Management Division at 529-4613. To be considered, completed applications must be received by 4 p.m. March 4.

Athletes win title at quadrathlon

Alister Ratcliff and Steve Ilg took the Overall Men’s Pair Title during the 33rd Mt. Taylor Winter Quadrathlon, a 42-mile, four-sport event (cycling, running, nordic skiing, and snowshoeing).
