Free fly-fishing seminar Saturday on San Juan

The San Juan Fly Fishing Federation will conduct its annual free fly-fishing seminar from 9:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Saturday at the Cottonwood Campground, four miles below Navajo Dam on the San Juan River in northwestern New Mexico.

Participants can pick and choose from a variety of topics that will be presented in 20- to 30-minute blocks, including equipment selection and use; San Juan River aquatic life; rigging and knots; dry fly fishing and river reading; float tubing and safety; fishing with nymphs, jigs and fish handling; hands-on casting; and fly tying.

A New Mexico State Parks day pass is required for each vehicle and will be issued free to all seminar participants while the seminar is in progress.

Waders are not required. The federation suggests you bring a lawn chair for comfort and a paper and pen to take notes.

The nonprofit club asks that those planning to attend the seminar call Brian at (505) 334-9875 so it can better prepare for the number of participants.

Navajo State Park to host open house

Managers of Navajo State Park invite people interested in the park to attend an open house and potluck chili dinner at 6 p.m. April 29 at the park’s visitors’ center near Arboles south of Colorado Highway 151.

Managing recreation at Navajo Reservoir will be challenging this year because of the low water level. The current level of the water is 6,022 feet, more than 60 feet below the maximum level.

This meeting will be important for boaters and people who rent slips and mooring balls. Besides presenting information, Navajo Reservoir stakeholders are encouraged to ask questions and offer ideas and suggestions.

Participants are asked to bring a chili dish or side dish and a chair.

For more information and to RSVP, call 883-2208.
