Turkey Federation hosts event for kids

Robinsons Game Farm, on County Road 235, will host the La Plata County Chapter of the National Wild Turkey Federation Jakes Day on Oct. 4.

This is a day of outdoor fun for kids. The event will begin at 9 a.m. with hunters safety from the Parks and Wildlife, then to skeet shooting, archery and a live pheasant hunt. Lunch will be provided along with drawings for prizes.

Free fly fishing seminar available

The San Juan Fly Fishing Federation will host a free fly fishing seminar from 9:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Oct. 4 at the Cottonwood Campground Day Use Area.

Participants should meet in the parking lot along the San Juan River four miles below Navajo Dam.

There will be a variety of topics presented in 20- to 30-minute blocks. Topics will include: equipment selection and use; San Juan River aquatic life, rigging and knots; fly fishing styles and river reading; float tubing and fishing regulations; river etiquette and fish handling; and hands-on casting. Free refreshments will be available.

Fall color tour available at DMR

Durango Mountain Resort, Durango Fun Center and Altitude ATV Rentals will host a color tour from today through Sunday.

Participants may ride their own all-terrain vehicle or rent one at DMR from Altitude ATV and get a free map of the area with suggestions on the best spots to view the fall foliage. Experts from Durango Fun Center will be on site to showcase new machines and answer questions about the latest ATV’s and other off-road vehicles. DMR’s mountain activities will be available Saturday and Sunday.

New signs posted in Boggy-Glade

New road signs have been posted on roads open to general public use in the Boggy-Glade Travel Management Area.

Numbers on road signs correspond with the July 1 Dolores Ranger District Motor Vehicle Use Map. At certain locations, road closure posts or boulders have been placed on the off-road routes, which are no longer open to general public use. The latest edition is available free at the Dolores Public Lands Office, and at www.fs.usda.gov/main/sanjuan/maps-pubs. The game retrieval area boundary and rules for game retrieval in the Boggy-Glade area also are shown on the map.

Information kiosks have been erected at major entrance points into the Boggy-Glade area to provide information. Camping opportunities are offered within 300 feet on either side of signed open roads.

LPEA to sponsor Sight-In Days

“Sight-in Days” will be held from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Oct. 9, 10, 16, 17, 30 and 31 at the Durango Gun Club outdoor range on La Posta Road (County Road 213).

During Sight-in Days, sponsored by La Plata Electric Association, the Durango Gun Club is open to the general public for rifle scope sighting, and hunters are encouraged to take advantage of the controlled environment to prepare their firearms for the season. Durango Gun Club staff, plus volunteer club members, will be on hand to answer questions, provide assistance and do minor firearms repair. Donations to the club are welcomed, but no payment is required.
