Mountain Club presents ‘Trekking in Nepal’
“Trekking and Volunteering in Nepal” will be presented when the San Juan Chapter of the Colorado Mountain Club meets at 7 p.m. Tuesday at the Lyceum at the Center for Southwest Studies at Fort Lewis College.
Karma T. Bhotia, owner of the Himalayan Kitchen in downtown Durango, will give the presentation. Bhotia was born and raised in the Chyamtang village of the remote Mount Makalu region of northeast Nepal who became a certified mountain guide and professional photographer.
Bhotia moved to the United States in 2000, establishing a restaurant in Pasadena, California. He has operated Himalayan Kitchen since 2006.

Nature Studies announces programs
Durango Nature Studies announces these programs:
The Durango Nature Center is open from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturdays through Oct. 25. The center is free for members and children 12 and younger and $5 for nonmembers.
A songbird and raptor workshop will take place from 8:30 to 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the center. The workshop is free for members and $10 for nonmembers. Participants should bring binoculars and a bird book if they have them.
A bird walk along the Animas River will take place from 9 to 10 a.m. May 21, starting at at For the Birds next to Rotary Park at 15th Street and East Second Avenue. No registration is necessary.
A tracking and wilderness skills workshop will take place from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. May 24 at the center. The workshop is free for members and $10 for nonmembers.
A new moon Astro-Tour will take place at 9 p.m. May 30 at the center. The program is free for members and $10 for nonmembers.
Registration is open for summer day camps. Camps are available for kids in kindergarten to fifth grade.

Replacement begins on Mineral Creek Bridge
The San Juan National Forest will begin replacement of the Mineral Creek Bridge on Forest Road 585 on May 27. The road provides access to the South Mineral Creek campground and the Ice Lakes and Clear Lake trailheads.
Construction will last throughout the summer. A bypass will allow vehicle access to public lands beyond the bridge. However, the Anvil and Sultan dispersed camping areas adjacent to the construction site will be closed. Signs will be posted to direct traffic, but no loss in access or delays are expected.

Navajo State Park announces events
Navajo State Park, 1526 County Road 982, in Arboles, will host these programs:
A class on raptors will take place at 9 a.m. May 24 at the picnic pavilion. Experts from St. Francis Sanctuary and Wildlife Rehabilitation will present a program featuring Dooley, a peregrine falcon that was injured in the Durango area. Pat Jackson, sanctuary founder and director, will discuss how injured birds are rehabilitated and how they are released back to the wild. Jackson also will talk about the peregrines’ life cycle, history and ecology, migration and nesting habits.
A kite-making and kite-flying event for children 6 and older will begin at 9 a.m. May 25 at the Rosa Campground shower building. Materials and instruction will be provided. Participants will gather at 6 p.m. near the Tiffany Campground to fly their kites.
