Locals compete at Chama races
Steve Ilg completed his third consecutive title defense in the 7.5-kilometer freestyle and won his third consecutive silver medal in the overall King of the Mountain category to lead efforts of Durango Nordic skiers and snowshoers at the recent 41st annual Chama Chile Ski Classic.
The event on Cumbres Pass near Chama, N.M., featured eight Nordic and snowshoeing races plus clinics and family-oriented events over two days.
Ilg, 51, a local yoga/fitness teacher, won the King of the Mountain, which combines results from a 10K classic ski and 5K snowshoe, in 2010.
Results for other Durango racers included Mike Dietzman, 51, third in the 15K freestyle; Caleb Thompson, 30, fourth in the 15K; Deborah Sussex, 52, 13th overall and third female in the 15K; Andrew Ferguson, 52, 14th in the 15K; and Sandra Lee, 47, second in her age group and 11th female overall in the 5K snowshoe.
