Purg season passes discounted till Sept. 14

Season passes for Purgatory at Durango Mountain Resort’s 2013-14 ski season are on sale through Sept. 14.

Season pass holders will receive unlimited skiing and riding with no blackout dates, benefits at other resorts and discounts at DMR restaurants, SnowMonster’s Den child care facility and Ski and Ride School.

Pass holders also receive “Purgatory Perks,” benefits at Zia Taqueria, Star Liquors, Carver Brewing Co., Steaming Bean Coffee Co., Trimble Spa & Hot Springs, Lost Dog Bar & Lounge and Mild to Wild.

Pass holders also may bring a friend to Purgatory and receive $65 lift tickets. DMR is offering season pass buyers the option of purchasing insurance through Travel Guard for 6 percent of the cost of the pass.

Prices vary according to age. Passes are available for purchase online at www.skiPurg.com/seasonpass; from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday to Friday at the DMR’s Bodo Industrial Park office; and from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday to Friday and 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday at the DMR ticket office. Season pass prices will increase after Sept. 14.

Seniors Outdoors announces activities

Seniors Outdoors will host these programs:

A hard climb 7-mile climb of Grizzly Peak with 2,750 feet elevation gain will take place Saturday. Dogs are allowed. To RSVP, call Clark Lagow at 259-9337 or email clagow@rmi.net.

Challenging hikes to climb Mount Elbert and Mount Massive, 6 to 9 miles with 4,400 feet elevation gain, will take place Monday to Thursday. The group will camp at the Elbert/Massive campgrounds. Dogs are allowed. To RSVP, call Michael Snyder at 403-1042 or email comichael57@gmail.com.

A general meeting and fall potluck dinner will take place Tuesday at the Durango Community Recreation Center, 2700 Main Ave. A new-member orientation will take place at 5:30 p.m., followed by a social at 6:30 p.m. and potluck at 7 p.m. Participants should bring their own table service and a dish for eight with a serving utensil. People with the last name beginning with A to F should bring a main dish; G to M a salad; N to R a main dish; and S to Z a dessert. Participants also are asked to bring nonperishable food donations for Volunteers of America.

An easy, 3-mile hike from Haviland Lake to Forebay Lake will take place Wednesday. Dogs on leashes are invited. Nonmembers should RSVP to Dorothy Bregar at 385-1814.

Hesperus teen places 13th at rodeo nationals

Sixteen-year-old Kenzie Kemple of Hesperus recently finished 13th out of 100 competitors in the pole-bending event at the National High School Rodeo Finals in Rock Springs, Wyo.

Kenzie qualified for nationals as the pole-bending champion in the Arizona High School Rodeo Association, where she competed. She is the daughter of Craig Kemple and Ericka Estes, and the granddaughter of Con and Jacque Kemple and Dela Martinez.
