Seniors Outdoors announces programs

Seniors Outdoors will offer these programs:

“Snowshoeing 101” for beginners will take place at 10 a.m. Saturday at the Twin Buttes trailhead. Practice will take place on nearly flat terrain. Participants should bring lunch or snacks, water, snowshoes, poles, gaiters and winter snow boots or heavier hiking boots that are appropriate for snowshoeing. Parking for Twin Buttes trailhead is just west of the Giant gas station on west U.S. Highway 160. The cost to carpool is $2. Dogs are allowed. A cross-country ski from Red Mountain to Ironton will take place at 8:30 a.m. Sunday. Participants will ski downhill from Red Mountain Pass on railroad grade to Ironton Park. A backcountry ski into McMillan Bowl will take place at 8 a.m. Tuesday. This is intermediate terrain above Red Mountain Pass. Participants need climbing skins and must be able to make turns on intermediate terrain. Avalanche beacons and shovels are required. The cost to carpool is $9. Dogs are not allowed. Wednesday Wanderers will hike the Animas River Trail at 9:30 a.m. Wednesday. No RSVP is required. Dogs must be on a leash. For more information, call Eric Pahlke at 247-1130.

Parks and Wildlife seeking input on plan

Colorado Parks and Wildlife seeks public input in the development of its 2015 strategic plan. CPW will host public workshops, including one in Durango on March 18, and will offer a public comment form available on its website through April 3.

This strategic plan aims to improve the agency’s service and responsiveness to constituents. A workshop will take place from 6 to 8:30 p.m. March 18 at the Durango Public Library, 1900 East Third Ave. The 2015 strategic plan, which will guide Parks and Wildlife programs and processes and help allocate resources effectively, is scheduled to be finalized in the fall of 2015.

Spencer’s Classic is Feb. 27 at DMR

The Dave Spencer Ski Classic, a benefit for the Adaptive Sports Association, will take place from Feb. 27 to March 1 at Durango Mountain Resort.

A Welcome Party with registration for teams will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. Feb. 27 at the Lost Dog Bar & Lounge, 1150 Main Ave. Teams with costumes and themes are encouraged.

Race day – with practice runs in the morning, lunch by Zia Taqueria and racing on the Paradise Race Course from 1 to 3 p.m. – is Feb. 28. Prizes will be awarded for consistency, speed and best wipeout.

The Mountain Rally, a mountain scavenger hunt and poker run with contests, will take place from 10 a.m. to noon March 1. Prizes will be awarded for the best poker hand, correct trivia answers and other happenings, including costumes. Lunch will be provided by Kassidy’s Kitchen.
