San Juan Valley Trail to host sanctioned rides

The San Juan Valley Trail Riders will hold sanctioned trail rides April 18-19 and again May 9-10 in northern New Mexico.

The first of these North American Trail Ride Conference rides is at Caballo Canyon near Aztec, and the second is near Navajo Dam.

Durango Nordic Center reopens with the snow

The Nordic Center at Purgatory received enough snow to reopen its trails to the public.

Seniors Outdoors announces programs

Seniors Outdoors will host these programs:

A hike in Sand Canyon will take place at 8:30 a.m. Tuesday. The group will hike through the monument on the loop trail, visiting the ruins. Dogs are allowed. The cost to carpool is $9. To RSVP, email Steve Krest at skrest@earthlink.net or call 588-3806.

The Wednesday Wanderers will hike the Animas River Trail at 9:30 a.m. Wednesday. No RSVP is required. Dogs must be on a leash. For more information, call Eric Pahlke at 247-1130.

A moonlight snowshoe will take place at 5:30 p.m. Thursday. The group will meet at 5:30 p.m. at the Sow’s Ear Restaurant for drinks and appetizers before the snowshoe. The group will depart at 7 p.m. from the Sow’s Ear parking lot. Depending on snow conditions, the group will either trek up the Naked Lady Trail to Durango Mountain Resort, then traverse across the mountain, or cross the highway to the meadows and circle the lower cliffs around the Nordic track. The cost to carpool is $4. To RSVP, email Terri Wells at terriwells7@hotmail.com.

John Martin will lead a group snowshoeing in the mountains Saturday. An avalanche beacon and shovel will be required on most outings. Dogs are allowed. For details on the destination, descriptions and requirements, RSVP to Martin at 247-2581 or email jmartin@mydurango.net.
