Snowshoe tour to be held Saturday

A Starry Night Snowshoe Tour will take place from 6 to 8 p.m. Saturday at Andrews Lake.

San Juan Mountains Association will present this free event in partnership with the San Juan National Forest. Participants should bring warm clothing, warm boots, hot drinks, binoculars, and a flashlight with a red lens. Snowshoes will be needed. Kids’ and small adult snowshoes are available for free upon request.

Avalanche, snowmobile classes offered

The Silverton Snowmobile Club will host the Colorado Parks and Wildlife Avalanche Awareness Class at 10 a.m. Jan. 16 at Molas Lake.

The class, given by Colorado Parks and Wildlife, is a one day free class covering the basic lessons of avalanche awareness and use of beacons and probes. The Silverton Snowmobile Club will host a free snowmobile safety class at 10 a.m. Jan. 17 at the Molas Lake Cabin. This class is for kids between the ages of 10 and 16, but is open to anyone wishing to get snowmobile safety information. Students between 10 and 16 who successfully complete the safety course will receive a safety card that allows them to legally operate a snowmobile without direct adult supervision on snowmobile trails. The class is approximately 4 hours long and includes both time in the classroom and on the snow. To ensure that enough supplies are on hand, pre-registration is recommended. Pagosa ice rink seeking nonprofits

The ice rink of Town Park in Pagosa Springs will be open seven days a week and is seeking nonprofit organizations that may want to assist with rink operations on Mondays. In turn the rink will split the profits with the organization.

It is anticipated that the rink will remain open until March, and the rink will offer the following activities:

Public skating is available everyday.

Curling will take place from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursdays for $3. For more information, call Shelly Cox at (303) 204-4141.

“Stick and Puck” will take place from 8 to 10 p.m. Sundays, Tuesdays and Thursdays. The cost is $5. Participants must wear protective gear and the rink does have some equipment available for free to borrow. To join, call Jeff Quinn at 903-2997.

Family Skate will take place from noon to 4 p.m. Sundays. A family of four can skate for $20 which includes admission and skate rentals.

Skate lessons are available for both figure and hockey, taught by Kristal Fortune a two time World Medalist in ice dancing. Lessons are by appointment only. For more information, call (970) 398-1593.

Skate ski clinic offered Sunday

The Nordic Center at Purgatory will host a women’s skate ski clinic at 1 p.m. Sunday.

There will be classes for skiers of all ability levels. Equipment rentals are available at the Nordic Center. The cost of the clinic is $25 for Nordic season pass holders or $30 for other skiers.

Seniors Outdoors announces activities

Seniors Outdoors will offer these activities:

A Saturday Snowshoe with John Martin will take place at 9 a.m. Saturday. Specific details for these hikes will be emailed about two days in advance. Martin will announce on which trips an avalanche beacon is highly recommended. A shovel will be required on all trips. Turn backs with a partner may be permitted. Snowshoeing 101 for beginners and others will take place at 10 a.m. Saturday. Participants will learn the ins and outs and ups and downs of snowshoeing. Practice will be on mostly flat terrain. Participants should bring snacks or lunch, water, snowshoes, poles, gaiters and winter snow boots or heavier hiking boots that are appropriate for snowshoeing. Parking for the Twin Buttes Trailhead is just west of the Giant gas station on West U.S. Highway 160. The cost to carpool is $2. Dogs are allowed. A moderate snowshoe in vicinity of Andrews Lake will take place at 9 a.m. Monday. The exact route will depend on snow conditions. People should expect to spend about four hours on the trail. A snowshoe of Sheep Springs Canyon will take place at 9 a.m. Wednesday. This will be an easy snowshoe of 5 miles, west of the DoubleTree Hotel off of U.S. Highway 160. The cost to carpool is $2, and four-wheel-drive is not needed. Dogs will be allowed if trained to not step on snowshoes. The Wednesday Wanderers will hike the Animas River Trail at 9:30 a.m. Wednesday. No RSVP is required. Dogs must be on leash per city ordinance. For more information, call Eric Pahlke at 247-1130.

Snowmobile club to meet Thursday

The San Juan Sledders Snowmobile Club will meet at 6 p.m. Thursday at the La Plata County Fairgrounds, 2500 Main Ave.

Pizza will be followed by the business meeting at 7 p.m. New members are welcome.
