Skateboarding event to be held Saturday

Skateboarders of all levels are invited to “Tear it Up for Tyler’s seventh annual Skate Contest” starting at 11 a.m. Saturday at Schneider Skate Park, 950 Roosa Ave.

Divisions include Street and/or Bowl – Beginner, Intermediate and Expert levels as well as Best Trick.

Cost is $10 and includes a T-shirt, prizes and giveaways; $1 of each entry will be donated to Big Brothers Big Sisters of Southwest Colorado. Riders can register in advance at Durango Community Recreation Center.

Free nature walks available at DMR

Free guided nature walks will take place from 10 a.m. to noon Tuesdays and Thursdays from starting next week and running through Aug. 14 at Durango Mountain Resort.

Participants should meet in the main plaza outside the Backcountry Experience shop at Purgatory. These tours are led by San Juan Mountains Association in partnership with San Juan National Forest. No registration is needed.

Thirsty 13 half-marathon set for Aug. 23

The Thirsty 13, a half-marathon running event from Hesperus to Durango, will make its debut Aug. 23.

The race will begin at 8 a.m. at Hesperus Church. The course starts south on Colorado Highway 140, then onto County Road 125, Wildcat Canyon Road (County Road 141) and County Road 210 past Lake Nighthorse. Five aid stations will be set up along the course.

Before the race, buses will transport runners from the finish line at Ska Brewing Co. to Hesperus Church. Buses will leave Ska at 7 a.m.

The event will conclude with a postrace party in conjunction with San Juan Brewfest, which is 1 to 5 p.m. at Buckley Park.

Seniors Outdoors will host these events:

A 10-mile hike on the Upper Hermosa Creek Trail will take place Friday. Poles are suggested. Four-wheel-drive vehicles are recommended. Dogs are allowed. To RSVP, call Susan Beck-Brown at 375-0948 or email sbeckbrown@yahoo.com.

Durango 4x4 team third in Dirt Riot race

Four Corners 4x4 recently returned from competing in the Dirt Riot Central Series Round 2 race last weekend at Canyons Off Road Park near Fredericksburg, Texas. The team continued its podium streak for the 2014 season by finishing third place and advancing one spot in the season standings as they seek the Dirt Riot 4600 Stock Class national title.

Team owner and driver Jason Kaminsky was back in the car for this race with team crew member Kenn Bates, also of Durango, navigating.

The Four Corners 4x4 team is scheduled to compete next June 14 in the second round of the Dirt Riot Mountain Series at RAM Offroad Park near Colorado Springs.

Off-road races to be held in Arizona

Arizona Offroad Promotions will host an off-road race for motorcycles, ATVs and UTVs on June 14 in Tonalea, Arizona; July 5 in St. Johns, Arizona; and Sept. 20 in Vernon, Arizona.

Everyone is welcome to race or spectate. Racers from Arizona, New Mexico, Utah, Colorado, California and elsewhere are welcome.
