Durangoan wins biathlon at Wolf Creek

Steve Ilg of Durango won a biathlon race Sunday at Alberta Park at the Wolf Creek Ski Area.

The event was hosted by the Pagosa Nordic Club. Racers from Pagosa Springs, Flagstaff, Ariz., Albuquerque, Creede, Durango and Bayfield participated. Cross country skiers stopped three times along the course to shoot five pellets at targets. Each successful hit meant a 10-second subtraction from their time.

Ilg finished in 41 minutes, 33 seconds in the 12-kilometer race, edging Dan Batwinas of Pagosa (43:02). Jennifer Martin of Pagosa (51:53) was third.

Kip Nagy of Creede (26:43) won the 6K men’s race, with Larry Lynch of Pagosa (35:54) second and Jim Chenowith of Bayfield (45:11) third.

The 6K women’s race went to Kerry Rice of Creede (40:05). Maddy Bergon of Creede (48:46) was second and Dana Hayward of Pagosa (48:59) third.

James Chenowith III of Bayfield (22:14) won the 2K kids biathlon.
