Seniors Outdoors announces hikes

Seniors Outdoors will host these hikes:

A moderate-pace, 8-mile hike will take place Tuesday in La Plata Canyon. Four-wheel-drive and high-clearance vehicles are needed. Well-behaved dogs are OK. To RSVP, email David Wright at djwright001@gmail.com or call 259-5978.

The Wednesday Wanderers will take a moderate, 6-mile hike on Twin Buttes III on Wednesday. Dogs are OK but must be on a leash. Early turn-backs are not permitted unless people have a map and a working knowledge of the trail system. Nonmembers should RSVP to Ray Walker at 382-7662.

A moderate hike to 12,715-foot Sugarloaf Peak in Cunningham Gulch will take place Thursday. A possible loop to Highland Mary Lakes is planned. To RSVP, call Rich Butler at 403-3185 or email rbbutler54@gmail.com.

A 12.5-mile hike starting at Coal Bank Pass and finishing on the Cascade Creek Trail will take place Friday. Dogs are OK. A short shuttle is required. To RSVP, call Jeff Bailey at 764-8120 or email jewlbailey@yahoo.com.

Journey of Hope 5K to be held Oct. 5

The inaugural Journey of Hope 5K Family Fun Run/Walk will be held Oct. 5 at Mercy Regional Medical Center. Events will include a 5K run or walk and a 10K trail run.

Registration will begin at 7:30 a.m. at Mercy’s Breast Care Center entrance. The trail run will start at 8:30 a.m., the walk at 9 a.m. and the 5K run at 9:15 a.m.

Entry fee is $20 for adults; children younger than 12 are free. All proceeds will go to Mercy Health Foundation’s Journey of Hope Fund to provide free mammograms to women in the area who otherwise could not afford one.

Vallecito Nordic to host trails cleanup

Vallecito Nordic will host a fall trails cleanup at 10 a.m. Oct. 5 at Madden’s Corner at the Vallecito Nordic Trails.

Participants should bring water, lunch, gloves, hiking boots and trail tools including chain saws, shovels, pulaskis, picks, rock bars and loppers.
