Local canoer places 9th in World Championships

Zach Lokken of Durango placed ninth in the Under-23 men’s canoe final Sunday, as the Junior Slalom World Championships came to a close in Liptovsky Mikulas, Slovakia.

Lokken,19, finished with a time of 116.84, including three gate touch penalties. His time was 11.47 seconds behind the first-place finisher. He was the only American to advance to the finals. He was ranked 18th after the initial heats.

Lokken later teamed up with fellow Coloradans Tyler Hinton of Denver and Charlie Kieft of Lafayette to place 10th of 14 in the U-23 men’s canoe team event. They finished in 148.94, including 12 seconds of penalty time. Their time was 24.23 seconds behind the first-place finishing team from Slovenia.

Register online for hunter education

People in the Four Corners who want to take a hunter education course must register online through the Colorado Parks and Wildlife website.

Classes cost $10. In the Durango area, these classes are scheduled before the 2013 big-game hunting seasons from 6:30 to 10 p.m. Aug. 28-30 and Sept. 25-27 at the Durango Gun Club, on Florida Road east of Chapman Hill.

Anyone born on or after Jan. 1, 1949, must have a Colorado Hunter Education Certificate to purchase a hunting license.

In the first paragraph at the top of the page click on “Find a course at a place and time to fit your schedule.” Next, find the date and location of the desired course, click on it and then on the “register here” button.
