Rogan Brown will compete in his second consecutive NCAA Nordic Skiing Championships on the Salt Lake City Olympics course at Soldier Hollow, Utah. Brown is a 2010 graduate of Durango High School and alumnus of Durango Nordic Ski Club.

Durango Nordic skier to race in NCAAs

Rogan Brown, a 2010 graduate of Durango High School and alumnus of Durango Nordic Ski Club, qualified for the NCCA Nordic Skiing Championships for his second consecutive year.

Brown is a senior at the University of Vermont, where he is captain of the men’s Nordic team. He is majoring in mathematics and computer science.

Vermont is among the top Division 1 college ski teams, winning the Eastern Region Division last week in Middlebury, Vt.

The NCAA Championships will take place March 6-8 in Soldier Hollow, Utah.

Bear-hunting workshop March 8 in Montrose

Bear populations are healthy in western Colorado, providing a unique hunting opportunity, and Colorado Parks and Wildlife will conduct a workshop about hunting black bears March 8 in Montrose.

Tony Bonacquista, a district wildlife manager, will discuss bear biology, hunting tactics, field dressing, rules and regulations, and human-bear conflict issues.

The majority of the bear harvest takes place in September, when the animals are foraging heavily for acorns and berries in preparation for their winter hibernation.

The class will be held from 10 a.m to 1 p.m. at the Parks and Wildlife office, 2300 S. Townsend Ave. in Montrose.

Cost for the workshop is $10 which includes lunch. To register, call the Montrose Parks and Wildlife office at (970) 252-6000. The class will be limited to 25 people.

Bike shop to hold basic flat repair clinics

Mountain Bike Specialists, 949 Main Ave., will host a maintenance clinic on basic flat repair from 6 to 7 p.m. Wednesday and March 19.

Participants will learn how to prevent flats; how to remove and reinstall a wheel; how to replace a tube; how to use inflation devices; and how to use an emergency tire patch to deal with blowout.

Purgatory to host final Locals Benefit Day

The fourth and final Locals Benefit Day at Purgatory at Durango Mountain Resort this season will take place Sunday.

Lift tickets for Locals Benefit Day are priced at $40 for adults, $32 for young adults (ages 13-17) and seniors (65-79), $25 for kids (6-12 years) and super seniors (80-plus).

A coupon must be presented at the ticket window for the discount. Coupons are available on the Purgatory website at www.SkiPurg.com.

Medicine Horse Center, Annie’s Orphans, Big Brothers Big Sisters of Southwest Colorado and Sexual Assault Services Organization will benefit from all this season’s benefit days.
