Mountain Studies Institute to screen ‘Once Upon a Forest’

Mountain Studies Institute will host a showing of “Once Upon a Forest” as a kickoff for the Southwest Old Growth Forests Conference on Aug. 3 at the Smiley Building, 1309 East Third Ave.

Doors will open at 6 p.m., and the film will start at 7 p.m. Food, drink and alcoholic beverages will be available for purchase, and there will be door prizes.

Written and directed by Luc Jaquet, the film leads viewers on a journey into the depths of the tropical jungle. After the film, a panel discussion by forest scientists will explore connections with the film to old growth forests in the Four Corners.

Purchase tickets in advance at Pine Needle Mountaineering, 835 Main Ave. for $10 or $12 at the door Aug. 3.

All proceeds will go to Mountain Studies Institute to promote research and education in the San Juans.

Muck and Mire Adventure Race to be held Aug. 9 at DMR

Durango Mountain Resort will host the third annual First National Bank of Durango Muck and Mire Mud Adventure Race on Aug. 9.

Ten-kilometer and 5K events will be held along with a 1-mile Mini Muck and Mire Fun Run for kids.

A postevent celebration, with a Steamworks Beer Garden and products from Durango Coca-Cola will feature awards and prizes for best costume and other giveaways.

This year’s beneficiary is Food for La Plata Kids, which is helping gather donations for the Manna Soup Kitchen Kids Backpack Program, the Bayfield Snack Pack Program and the Ignacio Snack Program. Throughout the school year, backpacks are filled with food and given to children each Friday to take home.

During July and August, people can drop off new or gently used backpacks, nonperishable food items or monetary donations at any of the First National Bank of Durango locations in Durango and Bayfield and the Durango Mountain Resort Ticket Office and office in town.

Kennebec Challenge Mountain Runs to be held Aug. 2

Kennebec Challenge Mountain Runs, a Durango Running Club-sponsored event, will take place at 8 a.m. Aug. 2 starting from La Plata City Campground in La Plata Canyon (County Road 124).

There will be a 15-mile mountain run with awards to overall male/female and age group winners from Kennebec Café and an 8.5-mile fun run. Registration fees are $35 for the 8.5-mile run and $40 for the 15-mile mountain run.

All participants must have a Colorado Search and Rescue Card. The beneficiaries of this event are LaPlata County Search and Rescue and the Shanta Foundation, to build a school in Myanmar. This event is in memory of Alex Tejada, a former volunteer of the Kennebec Challenge and local attorney.

Seniors Outdoors offering hikes, bikes, climbs this week

Seniors Outdoors will host these events:

A hard hike is planned in Velocity Basin to Tower Mountain on Friday. Some bushwhacking and scrambling should be expected. To RSVP, email Bill Cagle @cagle81301@yahoo.com.
