Purgatory to host another Locals Benefit Day on Sunday
The third Locals Benefit Day at Purgatory at Durango Mountain Resort will take place Sunday.
Lift tickets for Locals Benefit Day are priced at $40 for adults, $32 for young adults (ages 13-17) and seniors (65-79), $25 for kids (6-12 years) and super seniors (80-plus).
A coupon must be presented at the ticket window for the discount. Coupons are available on the Purgatory website at www.SkiPurg.com. The last Locals Benefit Day will be March 2.
Sexual Assault Services Organization, Big Brothers Big Sisters of Southwest Colorado, Annie’s Orphans and Medicine Horse Center will benefit from all the benefit days.
Winter Warrior Snowshoe Race to be Saturday at Nordic Center
The fourth annual Winter Warrior Snowshoe Race will be held Saturday at the Nordic Center at Purgatory.
Competitors can choose either a 5-kilometer or 10K race. There also will be a kids race.
Sanctioned by the U.S. Snowshoe Association, the event is a regional qualifier for the National Championships starting later this month in Woodford, Vt. Athletes must register for USSSA membership before the race to qualify to participate in nationals.
Registration will begin at 9 a.m. with racing at 10 a.m. The cost is $15.
The Nordic Center is a short distance north of the entrance to Durango Mountain Resort on the east side of U.S. Highway 550.

Durango Nature Studies announces upcoming programs
Durango Nature Studies will host these programs:
A winter ecology snowshoe workshop will take place from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday at Haviland Lake/Chris Park. Participants will learn how animals adapt in winter, snow science, tracking and more. The event is free for members and $10 for nonmembers. Snowshoes will be available for rent for $3..
A Valentine’s Day full-moon snowshoe hike under the Snow Moon will take place from 5 to 7 p.m. Feb. 14 at Haviland Lake/Chris Park. Participants will explore natural history, nocturnal animals, local landforms and moon facts and legends. The event is free for members, $10 for nonmembers and $15 for couples. Snowshoes will be available for rent for $3.
A bird walk will take place from 9 to 10 a.m. Feb. 19 at For the Birds, 1560 East Second Ave. The walk will be along the Animas River Trail. No registration is necessary.
