Seniors Outdoors announces activities
Senior Outdoors will host these activities:
Larry Beck, president of the Natural Bridges and Arches Association, will lead an easy, 2.5 mile exploration of Northern New Mexico arches Saturday. A carpool will meet at 8 a.m. at Santa Rita Park. A hard, 14- to 15-mile hike with 4,500 feet elevation gain to climb Half Peak will take place Sunday. Dogs are allowed. To RSVP, email Dan Honig at dhonig@animas.net.
A hard, 12-mile backpack with 5,625 feet elevation gain to climb Mount of the Holy Cross southwest of Minturn will take place from Tuesday to Thursday. Dogs are allowed. To RSVP, email Michael Snyder at comichael57@gmail.com or call 403-1042
A moderate, 5-mile hike with 1,100 feet elevation gain on West Lime Creek will take place Wednesday. The trailhead is on U.S. Highway 550 between Coal Bank and Molas passes. Dogs on leashes are allowed. Nonmembers should RSVP to Tom and Lydine Hannula at 884-9052

Native plant society to host mushroom hunt
The San Juan/Four Corners Native Plant Society will host wild mushroom hunting on Monday in the mountains south of Telluride.
Participants will find wild mushrooms and learn about their habitats and edibility. Those attending a posthike dinner are asked to bring a potluck dish.
The trip leader, John Sir Jesse, has been leading mushroom walks in the Telluride area since the 1970s and heads the Telluride Mushroom Festival as well as his own business, Herb Walker Tours.
The group will meet at 8:30 a.m. about an hour north of Cortez. Participants should wear hiking boots, bring lunch, water, rain gear and collecting bags.

Edible plant hike to be held Wednesday
A walk to find and prepare edible wild plants in the area with Katrina Blair, co-founder of Turtle Lake Refuge, will take place from 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the Junction Creek trailhead of the Colorado Trail.
The event is sponsored by San Juan Mountains Association and San Juan National Forest.

Presentation about hike to Everest to be held
San Juan Mountains Association will host a presentation titled “Trekking to Mount Everest Base Camp” from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Tuesday at the San Juan Public Lands Center, 15 Burnett Court.
Mike Johnson, who has lived in Bayfield for 25 years and works for San Juan National Forest, trekked within five miles of Everest Base Camp to an elevation of 16,200 feet before turning around in 2009. Last year, he trekked the same route in Nepal, photographed Mount Everest from Kala Pattar and spent two nights in Everest Base Camp villages. Johnson will show photos of his journeys while describing what it’s like to be in there.
