Seniors Outdoors announces hikes

Seniors Outdoors will host these hikes:

A hard, 9-mile hike from Coal Bank Pass to the ridge below Jura Knob will take place Tuesday. An option to climb the knob will be available; some rock scrambling will be required. A car shuttle is required. Dogs are allowed. To RSVP, call Sherry Suenram at 259-5259 or email mikes@gobrainstorm.net.

A moderate, 4-mile hike to Purgatory Flats with a possible small stream crossing and ¼ mile in the flats to the convergence of Cascade Creek with Lime Creek will take place Wednesday. Dogs are not allowed. Nonmembers should RSVP to Rod and Sandy Harnett at 764-4478.

Nature Studies announces programs

Durango Nature Studies will host these programs:

The fourth annual DNS online auction fundraiser is underway with more than 100 items, almost all donated by local people and businesses. Auction items include trips, services, toys and other merchandise. Items are added each day. To access the auction, visit http://auction.durangonaurestudies.org.

A bear workshop will take place from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Saturday at the center. The cost is $10 for nonmembers, free for members. This workshop will provide an overview of humankind’s cultural and historical relationship with bears, and how to live with them now. There will be talk about the signs and habits of bears in the area and the role they play in the ecosystem.

A bird walk will take place from 9 to 10 a.m. Wednesday at For the Birds, 1560 East Second Ave. The walk travels along the Animas River Trail No registration necessary.

A full-moon hike under the Corn Moon will take place from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Thursday at Falls Creek. It is free for members and $10 for nonmembers.

Agency offering chukar hunt for youths

Colorado Parks and Wildlife will sponsor a chukar hunt for youths Sept. 28 at the Lone Dome State Wildlife area below the McPhee Reservoir dam in Montezuma and Dolores counties.

The hunt is designed for novices and intended to introduce youngsters to hunting. To be eligible, youths must be 12 to 17 years old, have a valid hunter safety card and small-game hunting license, and have approval of a parent or guardian.

The hunt will be limited to 20 participants. Advance registration is required.

Applications are available from the Colorado Parks and Wildlife office in Durango, by calling 247-0855 or by emailing Leland.flores@state.co.us. Applications must be submitted by Wednesday.

Telluride, Solitude share pass-holder benefits

Telluride Ski Resort and Solitude Mountain Resort in Utah are offering each other’s full season-pass holders three free days of skiing during the 2013-14 ski season, the resorts announced this week.

Both resorts will have blackout dates for the exchange during the holiday season, Dec. 26 to 31. Telluride pass holders also will receive 10 percent off all on-mountain food and beverage and 10 percent off any resort lodging at Solitude.
