Outside magazine profiles Purgatory Resort owner

Durangoans know James Coleman as the relatively new owner of

The story looks at Coleman’s ownership of the two local areas along with Purgatory Snowcat Adventures, formerly named San Juan Untracked, the Arizona Snowbowl in Flagstaff and Sipapu Ski and Summer Resort and Pajarito Mountain Ski Area in New Mexico.

In additional to profiling Coleman, writer Devon O’Neil also asked about Coleman’s rationale for significant investment in a winter-driven industry as the West contends with warming temperatures and drought.

Coleman’s answer? “Elevation, for the most part, matters more than latitude.”

All five of his ski properties have base areas at 8,000 feet or higher, where it is cold enough to make snow.

The profile also mentions Coleman’s favorite chain saw and his 46-foot tour bus once owned by Garth Brooks’ drummer.
