Outside money, politics don’t belong in Durango

I received a text on Friday, Oct. 17, which was hilarious, though unintentionally so. “Take Politics out of Classes,” it blasted, as it then went on to parody itself. “Protect Safety” – which somehow is limited only to bathrooms and locker rooms, not the school halls and classrooms where guns still roam.

“Keep Sports Fair” – like we even have any 6’4” boys competing on women’s volleyball teams. “Focus on Education, not Politics” – which is precisely what Durango schools do so well, as one of the top-performing rural schools in Colorado, when not disrupted by vocal ideologues more concerned with keeping kids “safe” from new ideas, actual history and diverse viewpoints than coming up with hard core ways to improve education and, yes, expand budgets.

You’ll get more of these notices. Road to Red, a dark money group from Denver, is promising to flood our zone. Vote for the school board that believes rights are not like pie – it’s good for kids to share, and there’s plenty to go around.

Vote for Erika Brown, Rick Petersen and Andrea Parmenter.
