For the second night in a row, the Skyhawks went to overtime.
And for the second night in a row, overtime wasn’t kind.
The No. 18 Fort Lewis College men’s basketball team fell 102-92 to Tiffin in double overtime at the Naniloa Volcanoes Resort Thanksgiving Tournament on Wednesday in Hilo, Hawaii.
The teams were tied at 81 after regulation and 87 after the first overtime. But a 15-5 edge for Tiffin (4-1) provided the edge.
“We missed a couple shots that were makeable shots, and they got the rebound,” FLC head coach Bob Hofman said.
“When you’re really tired and you make a shot, you don’t feel tired. When you’re tired and you miss a shot, you feel more tired.”
Nick Tomsick and Alex Herrera each had 22 points to lead the Skyhawks (3-2), and Oscar Garcia was a perfect 4-of-4 from the field for 11 points off the bench.
Wes McKenzie chipped in 12 points, and Mike Matthews and Cade Kloster had eight points apiece.
Free throws, however, killed FLC. The Skyhawks hit just 24-of-43 attempts for a 55.8 percent success rate.
Joe Graessle led the Dragons with 35 points, and Nick Ellison had a double-double with 11 points and 11 rebounds.
FLC is done with its non-conference slate and will open Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference play at home Dec. 6 against UC-Colorado Springs.
“We still have a lot of sorting out to do, and it is a long league season. ... We’ve just got to regroup come Monday and be ready to go and have at it,” Hofman said.
