Own goal sinks Skyhawks

No result for FLC against No. 15 Orediggers

When you’re playing one of the best teams in the country, making one mistake can change the game.

That was the case for the Fort Lewis College women’s soccer team Sunday. The Skyhawks (6-7-5, 5-5-4 Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference) scored an own goal in the 67th minute of a scoreless game against No. 15 Colorado Mines (14-1-3, 11-1-2 RMAC), and that stood up to give the Orediggers a 1-0 victory in the final game of the regular season for both teams.

FLC’s defense played a crossing pass dangerously in the backfield, and it led to the own goal.

“We had a little confusion in the backfield,” FLC head coach Jimmy Hall said in a news release. “We played so well, but it’s disappointing to score on ourselves.”

FLC was outshot 13-5 in the game and had just one shot on goal. Junior goalkeeper Caitlyn Espinosa made two saves in goal for FLC and was substituted with 8 minutes to play by Kodie Johnson.

Only pride was on the line Sunday, as FLC had already clinched the No. 5 seed in the RMAC Tournament, which begins Wednesday. FLC will travel to play at New Mexico Highlands at 5 p.m. Wednesday in Silver City, New Mexico. (10-4-4, 7-3-4 RMAC).

The other game will be played between No. 3 Regis (13-4-1, 11-3 RMAC) and No. 6 CSU-Pueblo (7-8-2, 5-7-2 RMAC) in Denver.

Colorado Mines clinched the No. 1 seed and will host the semifinals and championship. Metro State (13-1-4, 10-0-4 RMAC) is the No. 2 seed and also received a bye Wednesday.
