Pagosa Pirates too powerful for Bayfield girls basketball

Carlson leads BHS with 11 points

The first week of the season brought the first league game to the Bayfield High School girls basketball team. The Wolverines had to go on the road to face one of the league’s top teams, too.

Cayanne Carlson scored 11 points for the Wolverines. But, for the second consecutive game, BHS (0-2, 0-1 3A Intermountain League), BHS couldn’t get much scoring around Carlson in a 59-20 loss at Pagosa Springs.

Bayfield hung tough in the first quarter and trailed just 11-9 after the first eight minutes. But the Pirates (2-0, 2-0 IML) were able to establish a 25-14 halftime lead. After making some defensive adjustments at the break, the Pirates held BHS to only six points in the second half while putting up a 21-point third quarter of their own.

Senior shooting guard Adelyn Dozier dropped 19 points for Pagosa Springs, while junior Kori Lucero added another 12. Junior forward Molly Graham chipped in another 11, while sophomore guard Chantelle Caldwell scored nine.

BHS saw Madison Wells score five points, while Abby Tate added four.

Pagosa Springs will match with Alamosa on the road at 4 p.m. Tuesday. Bayfield will play its third game of the week against Southwest Colorado foes with a non-league game at 1 p.m. Saturday at Mancos.
