Pagosa Springs basketball teams get tough on Bayfield

Regular-season finales play out in Pagosa Springs

Bayfield High School was in a neck-and-neck game with the Pagosa Springs Pirates on the road Thursday night, but a furious finish to the third quarter gave the home team a lead it wouldn’t relinquish.

The Pagosa Springs boys basketball team took its first lead of the game with 3 minutes, 10 seconds to play on a baseline drive and layup from junior Kyler Hammer to go up 25-24. A 3-pointer from Mitch Lewis the next trip down the floor and a 3 from Aidan O’Donnell from the corner before the end of the quarter gave the Pirates a 33-26 lead it would stretch to double digits in the fourth before they claimed a 45-36 victory.

The Pirates (9-10, 4-6 3A Intermountain League) would outscore the Wolverines (3-16, 2-8 IML) 12-4 in the pivotal third quarter.

Lewis scored a game-high 15 points, while Mason Snarr was a force inside with 13 points for the Pirates.

Landon Kennedy led BHS with 13 points, while Crosby Edwards added seven.

BHS would lead 7-2 early and 17-11 in the second quarter before the Wolverines’ pace slowed down. Pagosa Springs tied the game at 20-20 shortly before halftime on a 3-pointer from freshman Gunnner Dozier, but a Kennedy floater before halftime helped BHS take a 22-21 lead into the break.

The Wolverines never got closer than four points in the fourth quarter, as a tough Kennedy layup with 4:40 to play made it 35-31. The Pirates pulled away and led as much as 44-34 in the final minutes.

The game signaled the end of the regular season for both teams.

Girls Basketball

The fourth-ranked Pirates were too much for the Bayfield Wolverines on Thursday night in Pagosa Springs.

The Bayfield High School girls basketball team did a great job taking away Pirates star Hailey Griego, who finished with only two points, but the Wolverines were unable to stop the early shooting of Adelyn Dozier, who hit four 3-pointers in the first half as part of her 16 points to lead host Pagosa Springs to a 47-26 victory.

The Pirates (15-3, 9-1 IML) raced out to a 10-0 lead before Bayfield got on the board with a free throw from Madison Oltmanns with 2:42 to play in the first quarter. That was all the space the powerhouse Pagosa team needed to secure the win and the IML league championship one game in front of Centauri (17-2, 8-2 IML) and two in front of Alamosa (15-4, 7-3 IML).

Along with Dozier, Elsa Lindner had a big game with 12 points, and Taylor Lewis finished with eight.

Aubree Farmer had a big night for Bayfield (8-11, 3-7 IML) with 10 points, and Oltmanns had eight. BHS star forward Macee Schulz was limited to three points by the defense of Griego, Lindner and Molly Graham.

Pagosa Springs gave BHS looks to shoot from outside, but the Wolverines opted to work the ball around the perimeter and try to feed it inside to Farmer or Schulz.

Thursday nights’ game was the end of the regular season for both IML squads.
