The Bayfield High School girls soccer team got onto its home field for the first time since the 2019 season Friday.

The Wolverines welcomed the Salida Spartans. Despite an opening-minute goal from Mattie Moore, BHS (0-2) would fall 5-1 to the visiting Spartans in a non-league contest.

Moore got her goal off a corner kick, as her strike from the corner would deflect off Salida goalkeeper Makiah Parris into the goal.

Salida would tie the match at 1-1 in the 15th minute on a goal from Eva Capozza. In the 39th minute, the game-winning goal would come from Rachel Pelino, who was assisted by Quinn Barkley.

BHS nearly tied the match before halftime, but Parris denied freshman Preslie Wagner on a close-range shot before the break.

In the second half, the Spartans (1-0) would score in the 48th minute, as Toby Lawson directed a free kick from just outside the goal box. Pelino was able to get her foot on the ball to beat BHS goalkeeper Jaden Cooper for her second goal of the match.

Jayda Winkler would score on a breakaway for Salida in the 54th minute with a shot placed into the bottom right corner of goal. The final Spartans strike was in the 61st minute, as Elise Bosanko blasted a shot in from 25 yards out.

BHS will open league play at 11 a.m. Saturday at Alamosa.
