‘Park, walk mile in the mud’

We live down a two-mile dirt road, barely maintained by La Plata County’s Road and Bridge division. That was until we set up a brand-new homestead three years ago.

After many emails alerting the county we were there, paid our permits and taxes, we fought and fought to get the county to start fully plowing, maintaining the road. But up to a point. The county planted a street sign saying the road would only be maintained 1.78 miles down. Our driveway is another one mile past that end point.

We asked why. They respond, no funding. Funds are in moratorium. The problem is that the one mile to our driveway is not covered in base gravel. It’s slimy, red clay mud. When it rains and snows, we are unable to get to our house. Mind you, when we built our house in 2019, the county made us pay for the gravel driveway so emergency vehicles could get there. They are unable to get down the county road.

We haven’t been able to get answers as to when we can get access to our driveway or house. Let alone emergency vehicles, other than summertime.

We've been told by road and bridge, “That’s the hypocrisy of it,” pertaining to paying permits but not having access to our own house. Going on four years now. No progress. We have to park and walk one mile in the mud. Just to get home.
